Wonders of Sikkim to come in small packages! Sikkim it is a landlocked Indian Statelocated in the Himalayan Mountains, it is bordered by Nepal to the West. According to the legend, the Buddhist guru Padmasambhava visited Sikkim in the 8th century AD, introduced Buddhism and foretold the era of the Sikkimese monarchy. Sikkims Namgyal dynasty was established in 1642. The nest 150 yeras, the kingdom witnessed frequent raids and territorial losses to Nepalese invaders. Population of Sikkim comprises of 610, 577 with its literacy rate 82.2%.
Gangtok is located at an altitude of 54101 ft in East-Sikkim. Distances from NJP the nearest major railway station is 126 kms, from Bagdogra airport 124 kms, from Siliguri 114 Kms and from Darjeeling 98 kms. At the time to Losar festivals most offices and educational institutions are closed for a week. Western rock music and Indian pop have also gained wide following in Sikkim. Nepali rock and Lepcha music are also popular. Sikkim’s most popular sports are football and cricket, although hang gliding and river rafting have also grown popular as part of the tourism industry. Noodle based dishes such as thukpa, chowmein, thanthuk, fakthu, gyathuk and wonton are common in Sikkim whereas Momos steamed dumplings filled with vegetables, buffalo meat or pork and served with soup are a popular snacks. Sikkim has the third highest per capita alcoholism rate amongst all Indian state, behind Punjab and Haryana.
